Le nouvel album de Brittany Howard est inattendu. Pas par son timing de sortie ou sa simple existence, non, mais par sa consistance et sa densité. La chanteuse et guitariste américaine à la voix d’or, échappée pour la deuxième fois du groupe Alabama Shakes après son album Jaime paru en 2019, qui s’inscrivait dans la lignée globale de sa formation originelle, prend cette fois la tangente en s’orientant vers des sonorités inédites la concernant, convoquant le spectre bienveillant de Prince sur des titres tels que Another Day et surtout Power To Undo, qui vire presque à l’hommage. Mais What Now n’est pas que cela. C’est également un album sinueux, parcours dans un rock parfois expérimental où tout le monde doit jouer fort, monter le volume pour que les vocalises de la protagonistes, puissantes, n’écrasent pas ses acolytes musiciens, dont le fidèle bassiste d’Alabama Shakes, Zac Cockrell. Il faut se mettre au niveau, envoyer pour extérioriser et soutenir les ressentis. Que ce soit les synthétiseurs eighties très marqués ou les guitares frôlant le blues et tordant chaudement, Brittany manie les éléments à la manière d’une alchimiste, testant, accumulant pour, au détour d’un changement de morceau, revenir à l’essentiel. Les instants de calme, tels que Samson ou Patience, sont également propices à l’expression d’une personnalité artistique en perpétuelle construction, et qui livre ici un superbe album. © Brice Miclet/Qobuz
