Violoniste de tous les succès, Joshua Bell crée une nouvelle fois l'évènement avec cette lecture de deux symphonies beethoveniennes, la quatrième et la septième, conduites depuis son pupitre de soliste et chef d'orchestre de l'Academy of Saint Martin in the Fields. Ce n'est pas tant une première pour lui depuis les Quatre saisons de Vivaldi (2008) où il tenait le même poste que pour la phalange britannique qui opère sans son fondateur historique Neville Marriner, concrétisant la nomination de l'Américain au siège de directeur musical de l'ensemble.
Longuement travaillées de répétitions en concerts d'une gigantesque tournée nord-américaine, les deux symphonies en ressortent avec une certaine flamboyance, outre la grande maîtrise technique qui caractérise le chef perfectionniste, auquel aucun détail de tempo ni de couleur n'échappe. L'Adagio - Allegro vivace qui ouvre la 4ème symphonie témoigne de la rigueur tendue sous la fluidité orchestrale de l'ensemble. Une grâce et une fraîcheur qui se diluent peu à peu dans l'Adagio puis l' Allegro molto e vivace avant la reprise en main du mouvement final.
Formé à l'ancienne par un élève d'Eugène Ysaÿe, le professeur Josef Gingold, le violoniste fait preuve d'un certain lyrisme dans les passages lents, une poésie toute européenne qui convient à l'orchestre à la réputation de finesse. Un lissage orchestral remis à sa place quand il s'agit d'attaquer Poco sostenuto - Vivace une septième symphonie plus vive, ardente dans le Trio du troisième mouvement après un brillant Allegretto. Le finale Allegro con brio reprend non sans éclat les rythmes joyeux des danses qui ont inspiré le compositeur. Attaché à reproduire les volontés du maître à travers ses nuances, Joshua Bell signe un doublé aussi méticuleux que dynamique. Une belle performance.
