Vicky Chow
The pianist of the Bang on a Can All-Stars, Vicky Chow is a major force in contemporary music in New York, where she is based. Chow has collaborated with numerous composers, artists, and ensembles in that field.
Chow was born in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, to parents from Hong Kong. She was a child prodigy who knew by age eight that she wanted to attend the Juilliard School in New York. During what she has called super classical piano studies, Chow won several prizes in Vancouver, made her debut with the Vancouver Symphony at ten, and placed highest in her age group at the Canadian National Competition. That gave her the chance to perform the first movement of Prokofiev's Piano Concerto No. 1 in D flat major, Op. 10, with an orchestra. She did indeed move to New York and attend the Juilliard School, earning bachelor's and master's degrees there, but she was restless in the traditional atmosphere at Juilliard, and when a friend needed a substitute for a concert of works by contemporary composer Zhou Tian, she jumped at the chance. Chow began to explore programs oriented toward contemporary music, and that led her to the Manhattan School of Music. There, she became part of an active new music scene, and composer Andy Akiho wrote a piece, Vick(i/y), for her in 2008.
The following year, Chow joined the Bang on a Can All-Stars. She has toured widely with that group and made a number of recordings, beginning with Big, Beautiful, Dark and Scary in 2012. In performance, Chow has collaborated with such major groups as the Kronos Quartet and The Knights, as well as with composers, including Meredith Monk, John Zorn, and Steve Reich. She made her solo recording debut with Tristan Perich: Surface Image in 2014 and followed that up with Aorta in 2016 and Michael Gordon: Sonatra in 2018. Chow has made several recordings of music by composer Jane Antonia Cornish, including Sierra (2022).
