Art d'Ecco
Art d'Ecco combines decades worth of stylish, genre-bending music into his own subversively catchy sound and vision. On 2018's Trespasser, d'Ecco's blend of glam rock, post-punk, and synth pop evoked the likes of David Bowie, Iggy Pop, and Robert Smith without tracing their lines too closely; with 2021's In Standard Definition and the following year's After the Headrush, he added more ambition to the mix, giving his reflections on nostalgia a cinematic sweep.
Born in Ottawa, d'Ecco split his time between Canada and the U.S. as a child before his family planted roots in Victoria, British Columbia. He began playing piano at age six, and by the time he was eight, his teacher estimated he had the musical comprehension of an eighth grader. During his teens and early twenties, he absorbed as much pop and rock as he could, finding an affinity with artists ranging from Iggy Pop and David Bowie to Tangerine Dream's Edgar Froese. After spending some time in Vancouver bands including Speed to Kill (the project of future Actors frontman Jason Corbett), d'Ecco suffered from depression and self-doubt that he combatted by moving to the Gulf Islands to care for his ailing grandmother. During that time, he focused on his music, which took the shape of 2016's eclectic, self-released set Day Fevers.
Following that album, d'Ecco wanted to take his art and image to the next level; intrigued by a black, bobbed wig he saw in a Victoria mall, he created a glittery, androgynous persona and a sound inspired by Bowie, Lou Reed, the Cure, and New Order to match. Recorded largely in a Gulf Islands cabin, Trespasser became Art d'Ecco's official debut album when Paper Bag released it in October 2018. He continued the album's cohesive mix of glam rock, post-punk, and synth pop on 2019's cover of Joni Mitchell's "This Flight Tonight" for the tribute collection Joni 75: A Birthday Celebration, and on the 2020 single "I'll Never Give You Up." While on tour with Temples, d'Ecco wrote most of his second album. Inspired by nostalgia and the way people engage with entertainment, he entered the studio with producer/engineer Colin Stewart with vintage studio equipment as well as string players from the Victoria Symphony Orchestra and seasoned blues and jazz players on brass. Appearing in April 2021, In Standard Definition highlighted the glam rock underpinnings of d'Ecco's music. He expanded on this sound and mood with June 2022's After the Headrush. Drawing from the way moving back to Vancouver made him reassess his life as well as the dreams of his youth, the album's maximalist take on glam rock was recorded with Stewart and engineer Connor Head in Vancouver and Victoria and mixed in Montreal by d'Ecco and Mark Lawson, known for his work with Arcade Fire.
