Révélé à l'automne 2017, outre-Manche et dans l'ensemble de l'Europe par le titre « Leave a Light On », le multi-instrumentiste, compositeur et interprète écossais Tom Walker a déjà accumulé une ribambelle de titres en seulement trois ans. Cette productivité, associée à un éclectisme musical, lui permet de publier ce premier album, deux ans après l'EP Blessings (2017).
Produit par Jim Abbiss, Mike Spencer et Steve Mac, What a Time to Be Alive recense certaines des parutions précédentes comme le célèbre « Leave a Light On » et la première version, acoustique, de « Just You and I », aux côtés de nouveautés comme les extraits « My Way », « Angels » et « Not Giving In ». Sur ces titres, ainsi que « How Can You Sleep at Night? » et « Cry Out », prédominent son style entre folk et rock, avec un son puissant, tandis que des titres comme « Now You're Gone », avec la participation de la chanteuse suédoise Zara Larsson, ou « Walk Alone », sa contribution au hit de Rudimental, dévoilent sa facette plus pop urbaine et électronique.
Long de quatorze pistes, l'album est un condensé du savoir-faire de Tom Walker, qui s'inscrit dans une tendance où les compositions folk de départ sont très travaillées en studio pour devenir des succès potentiels, tirant fortement vers le rock, avec des refrains solides, des choeurs et la voix puissante qui est la sienne, à l'instar d'autres noms comme Hozier, Rag'N'Bone Man ou Mumford & Sons.
