Son Lux, Ryan Lott's solo project, became a trio in 2014, when the Denver producer was joined by drummer Ian Chang and guitarist Rafiq Bhatia. The Tomorrows trilogy, which started in 2020, offers complex music, elaborate harmonies, surprising sequencing, deconstruction, sound experimentation: all in all, it makes for decidedly intellectual art. The American trio use the album to explore the concepts of "imbalance, disruption, collision and redefinition". When you put it like that, it might all sound very abstract, but all becomes clear when you listen to tracks like Come Recover, where a weird, lazy synthesiser matches tempo with vocoded vocals, against a background of a cosmically chaotic rhythm section. These "songs" are more like mini-symphonies, so serious is the work that has gone into their composition, in comparison with standard pop fare. This is demanding music for demanding listeners. © Smaël Bouaici/Qobuz
