Le ciel est bien gris, limite anthracite. L’engrais idéal pour faire pousser un peu plus cette foisonnante scène du revival post-punk qui agite la planète indie depuis le début des années 2010. Mais comment sortir la tête d’une mêlée déjà dense au cœur de laquelle se bousculent Girl Band, Fontaines DC, Shame, Dry Cleaning et mille autres groupes armés de guitares carrés et de vocalistes plus proches de la scansion que de la chanson ? Pour y arriver, Yard Act embarque les marqueurs du genre et les influences prévisibles (The Fall, Gang of Four, Wire, premiers Talking Heads) sur des sentiers souvent inattendus. Mieux : ne pas se limiter à n’être qu’une boule de nerf électrique ou un vieux crachat à la gueule de la société (post-Brexit) qui va mal. Non, non, Yard Act se sert de sa rage pour trouver différentes formes d’expressions. C’est d’ailleurs sur le tempo presqu’apaisé de 100% Endurance que se referme The Overload, brillant premier album de ce quartet originaire de Leeds. Au micro, James Smith est un digne héritier du dalaïlama du post punk, feu Mark E. Smith de The Fall, avec un soupçon de groove en prime. Avec le guitariste Sam Shipstone, le bassiste Ryan Needham et le batteur Jay Russell, Smith emballe son cynisme et sa bile dans des habits lumineux. Une forme de dandysme prolétaire et sous amphétamine qui ressemble parfois à Sleaford Mods (beaucoup), Ian Durry et ses Blockheads voire carrément à Pulp ! Jamais caricaturales mais d’un réalisme bien sombre, les vignettes de James Smith sont parfois drôles et musicalement éclectiques.
