Avec Wide Awake! (2018) produit par Danger Mouse, Parquet Courts avançait plus que jamais sur le chemin chaotique du revival postpunk, porté par l’inspiration des fantômes de Jonathan Richman, de The Fall, des Feelies, du Velvet Undergound et un peu de Pavement. La bande d'Andrew Savage s’amusait aussi à modifier son ADN par des étincelles pop salvatrices et des grooves qui font chavirer les hanches… Produit par Rodaidh McDonald et John Parish (PJ Harvey), Sympathy For Life enfonce un peu plus le clou dans cette schizophrénie contrôlée en osant parfois des métissages à la Talking Heads (le groovy Plant Life). Pour concocter ce septième album, les Brooklyniens se sont d’abord lancés dans de longues jams avant de les élaguer pour accoucher de vraies chansons calibrées. Une approche mêlée à l’envie de s’inspirer du clubbing new-yorkais des seventies, notamment du Loft, le cultissime club informel de David Mancuso où exploseront Larry Levan, Frankie Knuckles et autres Louie Vega. Parquet Courts revendique également l'influence du Screamadelica de Primal Scream. À l’arrivée, des marqueurs dance assez forts mais qui n’empêchent jamais le groupe de rester viscéralement rock.
