Dans un groupe comme dans un couple, le secret de la durée est de savoir prendre du temps pour soi. Ainsi les Américains de The National, plus de 20 ans d’existence, et un chanteur, Matt Berninger, qui s’offre sa première escapade sous son nom. Sans son groupe, mais pas en solo. Une dizaine de musiciens ont participé à Serpentine Prison, parmi lesquels Gail Ann Dorsey (fidèle ancienne bassiste de Bowie, entre autres), Mickey Raphael (l’harmoniciste fétiche de Willie Nelson), Andrew Bird, et même trois membres de The National. Et l’album est produit par le légendaire Booker T. Jones, qui y joue aussi des claviers. Ce casting grand luxe ne fait pas un album blockbuster. C’est plutôt une certaine modestie qui le caractérise. Moins rock qu’avec The National, Berninger creuse les sonorités acoustiques et le filon de ce genre que les Anglo-saxons appellent « singer-songwriter », veiné de folk et de country, où les paroles sont aussi importantes que la musique. A l’américaine, cet album s’écoute comme la bande-son d’un road-trip nocturne, avec des moments d’extase, de rêverie et même de lassitude. Avec sa voix basse et son accompagnement élégamment minimal (piano, guitares, cuivres légers), Matt Berninger roule sur les traces de Nick Cave ou Leonard Cohen, ces crooners du crépuscule. Il ne craint ni la panne ni l’excès de vitesse. Chaleureusement produit, Serpentine Prison plonge l’auditeur dans des délices de torpeur automnale.
