Ce répertoire rare au disque révèle une authentique continuité avec les chorals de Bach. Sans jamais renier son admiration vouée au Cantor de Leizpig, son professeur, Homilius démontre un talent de compositeur prodigieux : de l'intégrale de ces chorals rejaillit une fraîcheur insoupçonnée ; en effet, il parvient à inscrire ses chorals dans l'ère nouvelle qu'est le "empfindsamer Stil". Ce courant littéraire exalte l'expression immédiate et la primauté des sentiments sur la raison. Il prône l'élégance, la clarté, l'équilibre formel et la simplicité de la mélodie. Né en 1991 et issu du Conservatoire de Strasbourg (classes de piano de Michel Benhaïem et d'orgue de Daniel Maurer), Thomas Kientz se perfectionne à Paris auprès de Vincent Warnier. En parallèle, il obtient un premier Prix d’improvisation à l’orgue dans la classe de Pierre Pincemaille au Conservatoire de Saint-Maur-des-Fossés, puis poursuit ses études au Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris auprès d’Olivier Latry, Michel Bouvard, Thierry Escaich, Philippe Lefebvre, Yves Henry, Pierre Pincemaille, Laszlo Fassang, Isabelle Duha, Alain Mabit. Il est titulaire d’un Master d’interprétation à l’orgue, d’une licence d’improvisation (DNSPM), de Prix d’harmonie, de contrepoint et d’écriture contemporaine.
