While pursuing his ambitious series of Franz Schubert's piano sonatas for Nimbus, Vladimir Feltsman has intermittently recorded the music of other composers, such as Bach, Brahms, Schumann, Scriabin, Silvestrov, and Prokofiev, thus keeping his versatility and virtuosity on full display. Here, Feltsman turns to Frédéric Chopin's mazurkas, offering a double-CD package of all 51 mazurkas that creates a compelling portrait of the composer, though often in his most introverted and melancholy moods. In his notes, Feltsman points out the enigmatic character and contradictions of Chopin's personality and explains that the mazurkas were essentially musical diaries for some of Chopin's most private expressions. Yet Feltsman brings sophistication and elegance to these performances, as well as a sense of direct communication, preventing them from slipping into sentimentality or secretiveness. As private as the mazurkas may have been to Chopin, Feltsman presents them with a rather more public approach, much as Chopin would have used when playing them in recital, no matter how guarded the act of composition must have been for him. Nimbus' recording is reasonably close to the piano and quite clean, allowing the music to sound transparent and natural without obvious studio enhancements.
