Après Tomorrow's Modern Boxes, en 2014, distribué en torrent sans crier gare, Thom Yorke revient à des circuits plus traditionnels pour son troisième album solo en studio – si l’on excepte la BO du film Suspiria de Luca Guadagnino en 2018 – pour un nouveau volume de “Radiohead électronique” chez XL. Dès 2006, son premier album The Eraser (mais surtout OK Computer quasi dix ans plus tôt ainsi que la multitude de remix plus ou moins sauvages) avait fini de persuader tout le monde que Thom Yorke était électro-compatible. Ses complaintes font merveille sur des beats technoïdes et il a l’esprit assez ouvert pour réduire sa voix parfois à un sample, qu’on peut couper, recoller, décalquer, superposer, comme sur Traffic, qui ouvre cet Anima.
De l’âme, il y en a partout sur cet album produit par le fidèle Nigel Godrich qui fait des merveilles sur Last I Heard (…He Was Circling the Drain), avec cet orgue céleste accompagné d’un drone et des vocals dédoublés, sans beat, avec juste une basse qui bat, un petit chef-d’œuvre. Du drone encore sur Dawn Chorus, et la voix claire, sans filtre ou presque, de Thom Yorke, une ballade dont il faudra se souvenir aux premiers frimas. A noter aussi, I Am a Very Rude Person, petit bout de funk rigolo avec ce beat qui se foire et les niveaux qui changent au milieu de la chanson.
Pour ce troisième effort solo, Thom Yorke se montre plus sûr de lui, et de sa singularité, avec des sons à classer entre Four Tet, James Holden, Burial ou Caribou – des gens avec qui il travaille –. Le minimalisme de la production fait aussi plaisir à voir dans un monde qui empile parfois trop de couches, mais ce qu’on entend surtout, c’est le travail d’un songwriter qui repousse ses limites. © Smaël Bouaici/Qobuz
