En Australie, du rap qui Oz

En Australie, une nouvelle génération d’artistes est en train s’approprier le rap à sa manière, en y injectant une grande dose d’Afrique et de sonorités profondes. Car depuis son émergence à la fin des années 1980, le rap local a toujours su se démarquer de son grand-frère américain. Souvent avec brio.

Seth Sentry – Strange New Past (2015)
Alors que la trap et les sonorités d’Atlanta avaient déjà conquis le monde en 2015, Seth Sentry est resté fidèle à lui-même. Le rappeur originaire de Melbourne a débuté dans la drum’n'bass au début des années 2000 pour rapidement s’imprégner des sonorités hip-hop. Il a le CV classique du rappeur qui gravit les échelons progressivement : repéré par un journaliste radio, popularisé par Internet, et sorti de l’underground grâce à un premier album, This Was Tomorrow, en 2012. Et la consécration arrive avec son deuxième essai, Strange New Past. Un album savoureux qui brille par ses morceaux les plus imprégnés de jazz comme Hell Boy, Sorry ou Fake Champagne. Sur ce dernier, il s’autorise à laisser de grandes plages instrumentales couler, montrant à quel point le rap de son pays accorde de l’importance aux instrumentistes, avec une couleur rock dominante, forcément. Cette même influence peuple les morceaux How Are You ou Run, sur lesquels les guitares prennent tout l’espace. Seth Sentry sait aussi jouer au naïf sur Dumb. Mais qu’on se le dise : Strange New Past n’a rien d’une blague.

Genesis Owusu – Cardrive (2017)
Originaire du Ghana, Genesis Owusu fait partie des artistes qui incarnent le futur du rap australien, entre mélancolie et noirceur. Basé à Canberra, musicalement très éloigné des rythmiques effrénées des années 2000, le rappeur a prouvé avec son EP Cardrive en 2015 que tout n’était pas affaire de BPM élevés. Ce sont la colère froide de Goondocks, les interludes poétiques de Tremendous : The Devil’s Soliloquy et la douceur aquatique de Blue Pill qui font de ce projet une œuvre majeure de la nouvelle génération de rappeurs. Sa cote prendra encore plus de valeur en 2019 lorsque son single WUTD sera choisi comme illustration pour une publicité très populaire en Australie. Apparaissant de plus en plus souvent masqué, se donnant des airs et une direction musicale de plus en plus mystérieuse, l’artiste sortira son premier album en 2021, intitulé Smiling With No Teeth. Certes, Genesis Owusu n’est qu’à l’aube de sa carrière, mais il est déjà en train de faire des émules.

Sampa The Great – Birds and the BEE9 (2017)
Sampa The Great n’a déjà plus rien à prouver. La chanteuse/rappeuse est née en Zambie en 1993, a grandi au Botswana puis en Californie avant de venir s’installer sur la côte est de l’Australie et d’y émerger en tant qu’artiste. Tout son parcours résonne dans sa musique. Un son libre, quelque part entre le jazz, le rap et la soul, profondément spirituel, et convoquant une imagerie où les femmes noires et fortes sont légion. Son album The Return, sorti en 2019, est certainement son fait d’armes le plus notable. Mais rien que pour l’incroyable titre Bye River, c’est celui de 2017, Birds and the BBE9, qui remporte notre affection. 7 minutes et 42 secondes d’ésotérisme, de féminisme, le tout porté par un band en roue libre. Sachant manier la transe, notamment sur le titre The Truth et les longues plages instrumentales, cet EP nous perd dans des plaines musicales dont on ne sait plus si elles sont africaines ou celles de l’Outback australien. Sur le titre Flowers, les rythmiques se font plus identifiables, plus hip-hop/jazz, mais les nappes de Fender Rhodes conservent cette touche de profondeur, toujours. En quelques lignes discographiques seulement, la musique de Sampa The Great est en train de conquérir le monde.

360 – Vintage Modern (2017)
« I’m naturally gifted and they hate that ! » C’est la phrase qui introduit le dernier album en date de 360, Vintage Modern. Un optimisme qui tranche pourtant avec les contrastes évoqués par le rappeur tout au long de cette tracklist. Car il faut savoir une chose : après avoir connu dix ans de succès grâce à des albums tels que Falling & Flying (2011) et surtout Utopia (2014), après avoir assuré les premières parties australiennes de Kendrick Lamar ou Eminem, 360 est devenu accro à la codéine et est tombé dans un état dépressif grave. Lorsqu’il sort ce quatrième album, il est un homme en pleine renaissance, qui exprime sa joie nouvelle, sa force, mais qui sait de quel trou sans fond il vient de s’extirper. Alors il alerte, sur des titres comme Way Out, Admission ou Drugs – il en viendrait presque à nous sermonner. Qu’importe, sur Vintage Modern, c’est le message qui compte. Et cette sincérité touchante vaut le détour. Certes, les sonorités très pop de Trouble (en featuring avec Gary Clark) ou de White Lies peuvent parfois faire regretter le 360 endiablé des débuts, mais la dureté de Coup de grâce (avec Seth Sentry et PEZ) et l’interprétation incarnée de Tiny Angel montrent que le talent ne meurt pas.

Camouflage Rose – Taste (2018)
Imprégnée des rythmiques nigérianes, sculptée dans les harmonies vaporeuses et les basses électroniques profondes, la musique de Camouflage Rose illustre bien le bouillonnement actuel de la scène rap australienne. Loin d’être son représentant le plus connu, le jeune artiste est pourtant sorti du bois grâce à cet EP, Taste, et notamment le superbe titre Late Nights, taillé pour les clubs embrumés et moites. La réverbe et la distorsion donnent à sa musique une direction futuriste, sur le titre Wildflowers, comme dans un monde où l’Afrique serait le moteur de la sono mondiale, et l’Australie un tremplin fantastique. Un ressenti qui survient à l’écoute de Let Me Down, en featuring avec la chanteuse australienne George Maple. Mais on le sait, le monde ne sonnerait pas pareil sans l’influence d’Atlanta. Alors, les titres les plus raps surgissent avec Dennis Rodman et Taste, pour notre plus grand bonheur.

Baker Boy – Cool as Hell (2019)
Comme les excellents HP Boyz, Baker Boy représente la face trop souvent cachée de la scène rap australienne. Celle qui incarne les communautés aborigènes, conte les difficultés de leurs populations, et fait rayonner des contrées autres que les grandes villes du pays. Originaire du Nord isolé de l’île-continent, plus exactement de la terre d’Arnhem, il a ébloui son monde en 2017 grâce au titre Cloud 9. Ses instrus, sur lesquels se rencontrent les MPC et les didgeridoos, ont mis la lumière sur son rap écrit en anglais et en langue yolngu. L’année suivante, il a remixé le titre Treaty 18, un classique de la chanson populaire aborigène datant de 1991, comme pour montrer que sa jeunesse ne l’empêche en rien de s’inscrire dans un héritage fort. Mais le vrai succès est arrivé avec son titre Cool as Hell. Auréolé de multiples récompenses, il a permis à son auteur de remporter le titre de “Young Australian of the Year” en 2019. A 24 ans, Baker Boy et ses aspérités rap/pop sont devenus une sensation en Australie. Son dernier titre en date, Ride, continue de mélanger les sonorités et instruments issus de sa culture à son besoin de rapper la fierté de ses origines.

Sophiegrophy – Bold (2020)
Rappeuse et chanteuse, Sophiegrophy s’inscrit dans la lignée de Jorja Smith ou Jazmine Sullivan, mais avec une musique plus pénétrée par les rythmiques afro, par un rap plus pur, comme sur le titre d’ouverture de son projet Bold, American Honey. Encore peu connue à l’étranger, elle dispose dans son pays d’une cote de popularité grandissante, sans que cela ne la fasse dévier de ses instincts artistiques les plus élémentaires. Les productions très élaborées d’Evol, totalement influencé par la scène nigériane contemporaine, ou de Boii, influencé par la house australienne sauce Future Classic, côtoient des titres taillés dans la TR-808 tels que Shake, chauffé à blanc et transpirant. Originaire de Melbourne, elle est de ces artistes qui pourraient bien définir l’avenir du rap australien en l’ancrant dans des thématiques féministes et progressistes de plus en plus prononcées.
