Cet album, qu’on pourrait considérer comme un point de passage entre De La Soul et The Roots ou Common, est une deuxième réussite parfaite pour ATCQ et leur rap intelligent, souvent abstrait (Kamaal The Abstract va devenir dès lors le surnom courant de Q-Tip), et toujours teinté d’humour et de second degré.

Puisant encore dans le jazz l’essence de leur son boisé et sinueux, samplant The Last Poets, Art Blakey, mais aussi Jimi Hendrix à plusieurs reprises, le Steve Miller Band ou Average White Band, ils échafaudent plusieurs couches de beats pour constituer ces raps qui deviennent des chansons avec le flow musical de Q-Tip.

À la fois minimaliste et riche, ce disque dans lequel on s’enfonce comme dans une moquette épaisse recèle sous ces apparences nonchalantes de véritables bombes à fragmentation, qui insinuent leur perpétuité dans la mémoire collective. Ainsi ces dialogues entre Q-Tip et Phife, en parfaite osmose sur « Check The Rhime » et tout au long des 14 titres. On termine en beauté avec le renfort des Leaders Of The New School d’où émerge déjà un leader naturel et ami de la famille, appelé à une formidable carrière en solo : Busta Rhymes, brillant sur « Scenario ».

Il y a 30 ans paraissait "People's Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm". Sans chaînes en or, sans flingues et sans ego trip, les New-Yorkais d’A Tribe Called Quest chamboulaient, dès ce premier album, l’histoire du rap en élevant le genre spirituellement et en allant puiser leurs samples dans l’univers du jazz.

La nu soul en 10 albums

Au milieu des 90’s, alors que le hip-hop vit son âge d’or, la soul entame aussi sa révolution. Avec Erykah Badu, D’Angelo, Jill Scott et quelques autres, le genre retrouve la classe, la sobriété et le raffinement qui animaient les albums de Marvin Gaye, Curtis Mayfield ou Roberta Flack. Après les années de règne du R&B sirupeux ultra-commercial, la nu soul, nettement plus underground, ravive la flame de la soul originelle, dans ses arrangements comme dans ses textes. Un mouvement bref mais hautement influent.

Kamasi Washington, le sax des Anges

Un triple album l’a placé au sommet en 2015 (“The Eric”), et il est revenu avec un double en 2018, le tout aussi réussi “Heaven and Earth” ! Kamasi Washington intrigue et charme par-delà la jazzosphère. Aux côtés de Kendrick Lamar et Snoop Dogg mais surtout à la tête du collectif West Coast Get Down, le charismatique saxophoniste de Los Angeles souffle un vent de folie sur la scène jazz contemporaine.
