Avant de disparaître le 31 octobre 2020, il fut tour à tour un jeune rappeur virtuose accueilli à bras ouverts par l'industrie musicale, un indésirable revenu sur la scène par la petite porte (et masqué) après des années d'errance, le “go-to guy” du rap indépendant des années 2000 et une sorte de messie indie adoubé par Thom Yorke ou Flying Lotus. Insaisissable, fantasque et volontiers fraudeur et cachetonneur, DOOM a dynamité les codes du rap, fait grincer des dents et ouvert la voie à toute une génération de MC's.
Madlib et Doom finissent par se retrouver dans le bunker aux murs épais de plus de 40 centimètres que le “Loop Digger” a transformé en studio et passent quelques semaines intenses avant d'être de nouveau séparés par leurs obligations respectives (Madlib peaufinera la plupart des instrus dans une chambre d'hôtel brésilienne) puis de quasiment renoncer à terminer l'album quand une première version de celui-ci fuite prématurément sur Internet. Madvillainy contient certains des morceaux de rap les plus magiques et spontanés jamais entendus ; les sciences conjuguées de Madlib (qui sample films de samouraï et disques rares dénichés au Brésil ou ailleurs) et Doom (qui érige plus que jamais le off-beat en art et joue avec les références comme un peintre avec sa palette) donnent naissance à un disque à tiroirs inépuisable.
Dans la foulée de Madvillainy, MF DOOM endosse à nouveau son costume de Viktor Vaughn (Venomous Villain), sort l'album-concept Mm...Food qui reprend en partie l'esthétique d'Operation: Doomsday puis s'acoquine avec le multi-instrumentiste et producteur Danger Mouse – révélé par The Grey Album et moitié du duo Gnarls Barkley – avec qui il sort The Mouse and the Mask sous le nom de Danger Doom, en 2005. Avec des invités tels que Ghostface Killah du Wu-Tang Clan, Cee Lo Green et Talib Kweli, l'album qui est produit en partenariat avec la chaîne de dessins animés Adult Swim est le premier de MF Doom à se frayer une place dans les hauteurs du Billboard. De plus en plus visible et demandé, il pose sa voix sur un des titres de l'album de Gorillaz, Demon Days, et compose pour Ghostface Killah. Il s'engage avec le label anglais Lex Records sur lequel il sort – après un hiatus de trois ans entouré de mystères et de controverses, dont celle des sosies présumés envoyés à sa place sur scène – le très attendu Born Like This en 2009. Doom y rappe plus dur que jamais, et si ses rimes sont toujours aussi complexes et subtiles, on est loin de la fantaisie de Mm...Food et des cartooneries de Danger Doom. Sombre et ramassé, Born Like This – qui doit son titre à un poème de Bukowski repris en partie sur Cellz – est sans doute le meilleur disque de Doom depuis Madvillainy mais son contenu peut paraître inquiétant pour qui se soucie de la psyché de son auteur.
Gazzillion Ear, l'un des titres phares de Born Like This, est remixé par ni plus ni moins que Thom Yorke, et Doom donne, à Londres, son premier concert en dehors des USA, en 2010. Il se voit refuser son retour aux Etats-Unis (né au Royaume-Uni, il n'a jamais eu la citoyenneté américaine) et s'installe donc en Angleterre où le gotha de la scène indie l'accueille comme une légende. Il enregistre avec le producteur Jneiro Jarel l'album Keys to the Kuffs (sous le nom de JJ DOOM) sur lequel on croise Damon Albarn ou Beth Gibbons de Portishead, ce qui en dit long sur le pouvoir d'attraction de Doom qui a retrouvé son humour et s'amuse à jouer à l'Anglais en détournant références et argot locaux (Guv'nor).
Discret de nouveau après l'aventure JJ Doom, il enregistre ça et là avec Flying Lotus, Earl Sweatshirt et Thundercat, BadBadNotGood et Ghostface Killah, le jeune rappeur new-yorkais Bishop Nehru ou The Avalanches (Frankie Sinatra). Jamais là où l'attend, il réalise un disque avec Czarface, formé par le duo de Boston 7L & Esoteric et du membre du Wu-Tang Clan, Inspectah Deck. Influence majeure pour de nombreux rappeurs qui pourraient être ses fils – dont Joey Badass qui rappait deux instrus Special Herbs pour sa première mixtape, et Earl Sweatshirt – et icône de l'âge d'or du hip-hop indépendant, Daniel Dumile aura marqué trois décennies de rap par ses innovations et son aura, autant que par ses frasques et ses absences. Près de trente ans après son couplet sur The Gas Face, impossible de savoir ce que nous réserve “le meilleur rappeur sans chaîne en or qu'on n'ait jamais entendu”.
