Shigeharu Mukai

Jazz trombonist Shigeharu Mukai was born on January 21, 1949, in Nagoya, Japan. He attended Doshisha University in Kyoto, Japan but ended up leaving before earning his degree in order to become a professional musician. Before he began his solo career, he played with Yoshio Otomo, Ryō Kawasaki, and Hiroshi Fukumura before forming his own ensemble and building a name for himself. He released his solo debut album, Favorite Time, in 1976. That album was followed by Spacing Out (1978), Pleasure (1980), Mukai on the Wing – Live (1991), Stance (1998), and Super 4 Brass (2001). During this period, he also released collaborative albums with the Furusawa Ryojiro Quartet, the Takeo Moriyama Quartet, Isao Suzuki & New Family, Astrud Gilberto, Yosuke Yamashita, and Takeo Kikuchi. Shigeharu Mukai continued to work with other jazz artists such as João Bosco, Elvin Jones, Kazumi Watanabe, and more. During the 1990s and 2000s, he taught jazz a the Senzoku Gakuen School of Music in Kawasaki, Japan.
