REI AMI

A musically dexterous Korean-born alt-pop singer and producer who incorporates rap elements into her confrontational songs, Rei Ami found success in 2019 with early singles like "DICTATOR" and "MAKE IT MINE." Over the next two years, she enjoyed a breakout featured spot on Sub Urban's "Freak" and continued to traffic in dark, adventurous pop of her own while building up to the release of her 2021 full-length debut, Foil. Her next collection, 2023's even more off-kilter shhh EP, was structured around themes of violence and crime. Born in Seoul, Rei Ami moved to the United States with her family at the age of six. As part of a strict Christian household, she got her start in music with piano and guitar, her parents paying for her tutoring in the hopes she'd perform at church services. While so-called "worldly" music was banned in the household, this only pushed Ami to find a diverse range of different styles, with early-life influences ranging from Britney Spears to Luther Vandross. After finding viral success on video streaming platforms with her track "Trippin Toddlers," the 24-year-old vocalist made her way into the industry with the 2019 debut single "MAKE IT MINE," blending sinister bedroom pop with a variety of genres from synth-funk to trap. With gloom-laced lyrics touching on relationships and revenge, Ami's vocal dexterity was also on show, shifting between sultry tones, husky rapping, and PC Music-esque vocal manipulation. Two more singles, "SNOWCONE" and "DICTATOR," arrived later that year, expanding on Ami's vocal variations with a rapidly shifting canvas of genre and style. Along with two singles of her own, Ami was featured on Sub Urban's 2020 hit "Freak." Her own 2021 single "do it right," featuring Anime, was another hit and appeared on her debut album, Foil, later that year. It also featured a collaboration with Lolo Zouaï. Led by singles with titles like "yellow tape" and "body bag," the dramatic, crime-themed shhh EP followed in November 2023. A month later, she appeared on the Dillon Francis mixtape This Mixtape Is Fire TOO.
