Nadine Khouri

With her hushed, intimate vocals and atmospheric arrangements, London-based singer/songwriter Nadine Khouri earned critical acclaim in 2017 for her second album, the John Parish-produced The Salted Air. Five years in the making, her 2022 follow-up, Another Life, reflected on a tumultuous period and dealt with issues ranging from heritage and personal struggles to societal upheaval. Born in Lebanon, where she lived until she was nine, Khouri began her career in London. An early devotee of shoegaze and the noirish melancholia of bands like Mazzy Star and Low, she independently released her debut album, Cuts from the Inside, in 2005. Khouri soon decamped to the U.S., plying her trade as an acoustic singer/songwriter in New York and releasing an EP, A Song to the City, in 2010. A mix of folk and atmospheric indie rock, her material ranged in influence from Leonard Cohen to dream pop. Returning to London, she eventually crossed paths with producer John Parish (PJ Harvey, Aldous Harding) and began developing material for what would become her second LP. Recorded in Bristol and released in 2017 to critical acclaim, The Salted Air introduced fans to Khouri's smoky, moonlit style and became her breakout release. The stripped-down three-song EP A New Dawn appeared in 2018, though it would be four more years until she offered another full-length. Working again with Parish between Bristol and London, 2022's Another Life was both sparse and potent, with lyrics exploring loss, upheaval, liminality, and Khouri's own Lebanese heritage.
