Manchester Collective

Responding to what they see as a contraction in the world of British classical music, the Manchester Collective seeks to reshape the tradition, not only as to repertory but also as to the venues in which it is presented. The Collective is noted for collaborating with other artists, both within and beyond the classical sphere. The Manchester Collective was formed in 2016 in the northern English city for which it is named and gave its first concerts the following year. The founders were violinist Rakhi Singh and cellist Adam Szabo, both of whom had conventional classical backgrounds in the training they had received. However, they were concerned about funding cuts and shrinking audiences in British classical music, and they wanted to develop ways of communicating with audiences directly. The Collective's concerts feature between two and 20 musicians, and venues have ranged from traditional concert halls to nightclubs, warehouses, and festivals. The group made its debut at the Royal Albert Hall in 2021 during the BBC Proms and went on to an artists-in-residence stint at London's Southbank Centre. In 2023, the Collective won the Royal Philharmonic Society's Ensemble Award. Signed to the Bedroom Community label, the Manchester Collective released several albums there, including 2021's The Centre Is Everywhere, and Shades in 2022. The Manchester Collective focuses on contemporary music but has also performed repertory works, including Benjamin Britten's opera Noye's Fludde (which the group retitled Noah's Flood). The Collective has commissioned new works from such composers as Edmund Finnis, Emily Hall, and Hannah Peel. Especially characteristic of the group's activities has been its range of collaborations with other artists, from classical performers such as cellist Abel Selaocoe, harpsichordist Mahan Esfahani, and guitarist Sean Shibe to sound recordist Chris Watson of the band Cabaret Voltaire. In 2024, the Manchester Collective backed soprano Ruby Hughes on her BIS album End of My Days.
