Lucy Mauro

American pianist Lucy Mauro has made several critically praised recordings for the boutique label Delos, one of which, Mademoiselle-Première Audience-Unknown Music of Nadia Boulanger, was honored with a Grammy nomination in 2017. That release featured a variety of performers brought together by Mauro. Mauro received bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees from the Peabody Conservatory of Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, studying with Ann Schein and Julio Esteban. Mauro's recordings have been praised not only for execution, but for novelty of content; they have focused on neglected female composers. Her first, From the Unforgetting Skies: The Piano Music of Margaret Ruthven Lang, appeared in 2013 and was one of several issued by Delos that have featured works by this composer. Her 2015 release Return to Old Ireland: The Music of Mary McAuliffe was devoted to that Cork-based composer, whose works have been played in both Ireland and the U.S. Mademoiselle featured music by Boulanger that in many cases had never been played; the music was from the first part of the influential pedagogue's career, before 1922, when she gave up composing and turned exclusively to teaching. Mauro has appeared at the Esterházy Festival in Austria and at festivals in Germany, Spain, Italy, and China, as well as in the U.S. She has taught at Alfred University in Alfred, New York and at West Virginia University. She is the author of a book, Master Singers: Advice from the Stage, and several music education publications. She is a voting member of the Recording Academy that bestows the Grammy Awards.
