Lila Drew
Los Angeles singer/songwriter Lila Drew sets poetic observations and introspective lyrics against music that touches on bedroom pop, electronic, R&B, and hip-hop. Her 2019 EP locket (side one) found some traction on streaming networks and she continued to build on her success with follow-up singles like "Crystal Ball" and "2023," the latter of which was later remixed by Majid Jordan. Released in late 2022, Drew's debut album, All the Places I Could Be, served as a sort of coming-of-age story, documenting her personal growth.
A native of London, Drew studied classical piano in childhood before starting to experiment with recording her own music after relocating to California as a teen. Citing influences like Frank Ocean, the 1975, and Taylor Swift, her early demos touch on a range of styles including pop, contemporary R&B, indie electronica, and hip-hop. Contrasting Drew's warm, soft-spoken singing with GoldLink's featured rapping, her first single, "faded/2am," arrived in October 2018. A year later, she worked with producer Mike McGarity to record locket (side one), her debut EP, which featured the low-key standout track "November." While attending Yale on the East Coast, Drew continued to record in her spare time, issuing singles like "Dad's Van" and "2023" in 2021. A year later, Canadian production combo Majid Jordan gave "2023" a remix treatment, further widening her fan base. After signing with the AWAL label, Drew released her first full-length, All the Places I Could Be, in November 2022. Along with previously released tracks like "2023" and "Crystal Ball," the 11-song album explored, almost in real-time, her changing emotions, attitudes, and aspirations.
