Late Night Final
J. Willgoose, founder of London-based sample-heavy rock trio Public Service Broadcasting, records solo electronic music as Late Night Final. The project's 2020 debut, A Wonderful Hope, consists of four lengthy, slowly developing ambient techno tracks imbued with both suspense and optimism.
Late Night Final began in 2020, as the recording sessions for Public Service Broadcasting's fourth album were postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Located in a different country than the band's equipment, Willgoose found several vintage synthesizers and effects units, and started experimenting. The resulting album, A Wonderful Hope, contains patiently building layers of cinematic synths and hypnotic rhythms, as well as sparing usage of the sort of archival samples often used in Public Service Broadcasting's work.
