Julia Doyle
Although always interested in music, soprano Julia Doyle began her professional career relatively late. She has specialized in choral music and vocal works.
Doyle was born, raised, and initially educated in Lancaster, England. She attended Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge, as a choral scholar (a student singer who performs at university events in exchange for tuition reductions). As a member of the Choir of Gonville and Caius College, she appeared as a soloist on several recordings, making her debut in 2002 on the Guild album Sacred Vocal Music from 18th Century Switzerland and appearing again the following year on the album The Anthems of Charles Wood, Vol. 2. Even after this promising beginning, Doyle did not immediately launch a vocal career. She worked in the U.S. as a consultant for research on linguistic and musical development in infants and then returned to England for a post in arts management in London. Only after these jobs did she begin to pursue a career in singing, and she quickly became recognized as a specialist in Baroque-era choral music.
Doyle has appeared in many of the world's top concert halls under leading conductors. She sang in Bach's St. John Passion, BWV 245, under John Eliot Gardiner at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam; in the Bach St. Matthew Passion, BWV 244, at Alice Tully Hall in New York under Philippe Herreweghe; and at the palace of Versailles with The King's Consort under Robert King. She has toured Europe with the latter group, performing Handel's Messiah, BWV 56, and Vivaldi's oratorio Juditha Triumphans. Doyle continued to appear on recordings, mostly with major Baroque groups such as Tenebrae, Polyphony, and The Sixteen, but also as a background vocalist on the Pet Shop Boys' album Fundamental. She appeared on a 2020 recording of Messiah by the Akademie für alte Musik, Berlin, under conductor Justin Doyle (apparently no relation), returning in 2023 with an appearance on the album Oliver Davis: Blue on the Signum Classics label.
