Ichiko Aoba

Japanese singer/songwriter Ichiko Aoba makes atmospheric folk music with intricate arrangements, primarily performed on classical guitar, and lyrics inspired by her dreams. With very little press outside of her home country, her music has attracted a devoted worldwide following, mainly due to word-of-mouth exposure on various online forums. She has released several studio albums and live recordings since her 2010 debut, from intimate acoustic folk recordings like 2013's 0 and 2018's qp to the cinematic dream pop of 2020's Windswept Adan. In addition to her solo work, Aoba has collaborated with musicians such as Cornelius, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Haruomi Hosono, and Kazuhisa Uchihashi, and made music for theater, advertisements, anime, and video games. Ichiko Aoba was born in Urayasu, Chiba in 1990, and raised in Kyoto Prefecture. Inspired by music from Disney and Studio Ghibli films, she learned to play classical guitar when she was 17, and was mentored by singer/songwriter Anmi Yamada. Her debut album, Kamisori Otome ("Razor Girl"), was released in 2010, and was quickly followed in 2011 by studio album Origami and two live recordings, Kaizokuban and Hinoko (with Kazuhisa Uchihashi, formerly of Ground Zero). In 2012, she released Utabiko as well as a limited collaboration with Haruka Nakamura, Meteor. Aoba then collaborated with Ryuichi Sakamoto, Haruomi Hosono, Cornelius, and percussionist U-Zhaan to perform a live session for NHK-FM's New Year Concert Program at the beginning of 2013. The performance was subsequently released as Radio by Sakamoto's Commmons label. During the same year, she appeared on Sakamoto and Taylor Deupree's Disappearance album and collaborated with Cornelius on a song for the Ghost in the Shell: Arise soundtrack. Aoba also released the ambitious 0, her first album for Victor imprint Speedstar Records, which became her breakthrough release. She began taking part in several theater productions, starting with Go Aoki's play 9 Days Queen, and undertook a nationwide tour in support of 0 that reached all 47 prefectures. The live album 0% was released in 2014. Aoba collaborated with Gezan's Mahito the People on the 2014 release NUUAMM. Her fifth studio album, Mahoroboshiya, arrived in 2016. The following year, she recorded the song "ANGELNOIR" for an episode of the anime series 18if. She also collaborated with Mahito the People on a second NUUAMM full-length, w/ave, and released the live album Pneuma with Hitoshi Watanabe (cello, double bass), Tatsuhisa Yamamoto (drums), and Jun Miyake (piano, flugelhorn). "Karakai," a single with downtempo producer Sweet William, appeared in 2018, preceding Aoba's sixth studio full-length, qp. In 2019, she was featured on the soundtrack of the Nintendo Switch remake of The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening, as well as its ad campaign. She also released an album of nature recordings titled Ayukawa no shizuku, as well as a second single with Sweet William, "Amaneki," in addition to featuring on Polish composer Albert Karch's Celestially Light album. Aoba founded her own label, hermine, in 2020, and released several recordings, including the two-song single amuletum bouquet, live album "gift" at Sogetsu Hall, and ambient recording "gift" BGM. She concluded the year with the exquisitely arranged chamber folk-pop full-length Windswept Adan, which instantly became one of her most acclaimed works. Acoustic single "Asleep Among Endives," inspired by Kenji Miyazawa's animated film Night on the Galactic Railroad, appeared in February 2021.
