Greylan James

Greylan James had already established himself as a successful songwriter in Nashville before he broke through as a singer with a gift for sharing his personal tales of young Southern life. Unlike many of his peers, James' tone is more thoughtful than rowdy, with his relatable tales of love and living expressed with the sincerity and candor of a friend talking over a beer late at night. James launched his career as a recording artist with 2022's self-released five-song EP I Hope She Hears These, and moved up to the majors with tracks like "My Future," "Young Man," and "Undermine." Greylan James was born in Knoxville, Tennessee on June 18, 1996. He was just five years old when he got his first guitar as a present, and he immediately started teaching himself to play. James grew up listening to country music, enjoying contemporary artists such as Keith Urban, Brad Paisley, and Kenny Chesney, while his grandfather taught him about classic artists like Johnny Cash and his parents spun rock from the '80s. When he was just 17, Guitar Center Magazine's "Brotherhood of the Guitar" series profiled the budding performer, and he also made an appearance on the music competition series The Voice during Blind Audition Week in 2013. After completing high school, James chose to skip college and move to Nashville to follow his dream; soon after he arrived in Music City, he signed a deal to become a staff songwriter for a publishing company. James struggled as he honed his craft to the level expected of a Nashville professional, and was let go after two years, but he continued to work at his writing, and credited repeat listening to Old Dominion's album Meat and Candy with helping him crack the code of writing a hit country song. James landed another songwriting deal, this time with Universal Music Publishing Group, and in 2020 he hit paydirt when Kenny Chesney landed a hit with James' song "Happy Does." Over the next two years, James saw his songs recorded by stars such as Chris Young, Darius Rucker, Cole Swindell, Jordan Davis, and many more, and with his star rising, James set his sights on making his name as a performer. In 2022, he self-released a five-song EP, I Hope She Hears These, the title referring to James' habit of mining his failed relationships for lyrical inspiration. One of the tracks, "Anything Cold," racked up a solid number of plays on streaming services, and in 2023 he signed with Big Machine Label Group. The deal paid off when James scored hits with the songs "My Future" and "Young Man," as he became a new presence on country radio.
