Allysen Callery
Allysen Callery is an American folksinger whose delicate, austere sound has been compared to classic British folk artists like Sandy Denny and Vashti Bunyan. A native of Rhode Island, Callery taught herself to sing and play fingerstyle guitar by listening to her parents' collection of U.K. folk records from the '60s and '70s. She made her debut in 2007 with the self-released Hopey, establishing herself as a player in the New England singer/songwriter scene. A second self-released LP called Hobgoblin's Hat arrived in 2010 and received airplay in the U.K. and Australia. With her international reputation growing, Callery signed with German label Woodland Recordings to release her 2011 EP, Winter Island, which introduced her music to a European audience. She followed up a year later with The Summer Place EP and returned to Germany for her second European tour. 2013 saw the release of her third LP, Mumblin' Sue, in both Europe and the U.S. Teaming up with Rhode Island-based musician and producer Bob Kendall, she recorded a session for Folk Radio U.K., which was released as an EP in 2014. The EP, which featured several original songs and a cover of the traditional British folk classic "Blackwater Side," also introduced subtle psychedelic textures into her music. That same year, Callery made her debut at Austin's SXSW festival.
