Au pupitre d'un Orchestre Philharmonique de Vienne survolté, Zeus-Karajan déchaîne d'emblée la tempête dans ce qui reste un des plus étonnants débuts de l’histoire de l'opéra. Cela tonne, cela rugit, cela crie dans la rade de Famagouste sur l'île de Chypre. Le reste est à l'avenant et le chef-d'oeuvre de Shakespeare/Verdi vous prend aux tripes pendant deux heures. La tension dramatique de l'ouvrage est soutenue de bout en bout par le chef et par des artistes exceptionnels. Qui osera encore dire que la Tebaldi est inexpressive ? Cet Otello est sans contexte un des plus grands enregistrements de l'histoire du disque. FH
