Véritable rupture de style pour Diana Krall, The Girl in the Other Room s’écarte presque totalement des classiques du jazz qui jusque là composaient son répertoire et nous offre son premier enregistrement de chansons originales. Il est fort possible que son nouvel époux Elvis Costello, qui a coécrit six de ces mélodies avec sa femme, l’ait aiguillé sur cette nouvelle voie. Aucune tentative de production orientée pop ici. Seulement le même trio avec piano qui constitue depuis le début son fonds de commerce. Naturellement, les nouvelles chansons portent également l’empreinte caractéristique de Costello, mais aussi loin que ses chansons puisent puiser leur inspiration (notamment des répertoires de Joni Mitchell et de Chris Smither), Krall perpétue le ressenti qui fait sa marque de fabrique et l’a rendue célèbre.
