On résume, donc on élague. Ainsi, les dix-neuf plages proposées sont un survol, mais une compilation ne constitue pas après tout une idée si absurde que cela, dans la mesure où la brièveté de la carrière (et de l’existence) de Christian évite les éparpillements (il reste néanmoins de ci de là quelques thèmes dont l’exploitation fut réservé au marché japonais ou européen), et, surtout, où sa fidélité au chef d’orchestre Benny Goodman permet d’escompter sur une authentique unité de style.
C’est le cas ici, que ce soit dans les standards proposés : « Honeysuckle Rose », « Stompin’ at The Savoy », « Royal Garden Blues », ou un raccourci saisissant, des fonds baptismaux de la Nouvelle-Orléans, au triomphe de l’ère swing, ou dans les morceaux de bravoure, essentiellement élaborés pour mettre en valeur l’homme au manche. Deux pièces historiques permettent en ce sens de mesurer ce que doit aujourd’hui tout apprenti guitariste à Charlie Christian : « Blues In B » et « Solo Flight » marquent à la fois un invraisemblable enrichissement harmonique de la guitare jazz, et à la fois l’instant précis de l’émancipation de l’instrument de certaines contraintes acoustiques.
Charlie Christian reste le Petit Prince, créateur et poète, de cet instant-là. Accessoirement, et même si c’est loin d’être le propos initial, ces moments de grâce permettent de considérablement réévaluer l’apport de Benny Goodman, juif immigré à peine toléré par les imbéciles, clarinettiste méprisé par les tenants de la virtuosité, et chef d’orchestre sous-estimé par les puristes, mais vrai, grand et authentique jazzman.
