Jusque peu après la Seconde Guerre mondiale, Alexandre Tansman était l’un des compositeurs les plus joués et les plus vénérés de la planète musicale. Parmi ses amis et collègues, Prokofiev, Stravinski, Ravel pendant sa période parisienne, puis Einstein, Chaplin, Thomas Mann, Gershwin une fois qu’il se fut installé aux États-Unis… Dans un tel bouillon de cultures en tous genres, Tansman put se forger son langage personnel, tout à la fois d’une complexité harmonique et rythmique diabolique, et d’un abord apparemment aisé et aimable. Trop aimable peut-être, car l’avènement après-guerre d’une certaine avant-garde pas toujours bienveillante sonna le glas de ce musicien pour lequel liberté ne signifiait en rien anarchie, modernisme en rien destruction du passé. On écoutera d’ailleurs avec un certain étonnement la Toccata de l’Hommage à Rubinstein de 1973, tout à la fois hyper-moderne et héritier de Ravel ; ou l’Allegro meccanico de 1944, derrière lequel pointe un Prokofiev menaçant et pourtant drolatique ; ou l’intrigante Visite en Israël de 1958, hiératique parfois, cocasse par moments, superbe toujours. Le lecteur l’aura saisi, Tansman représente beaucoup plus qu’un musicien inclassable, entre traditionnel et moderne, entre avant-garde raisonnée et délicat folklorisme imaginaire… un compositeur tellement inclassable que, hélas, on ne le classe jamais, alors que ses œuvres méritent toute l’attention de quiconque s’intéresse au XXe siècle. Veuillez noter que quelques-unes de ces œuvres pour piano sont ici données en première discographique mondiale, c’est dire combien le chemin est encore long avant que Tansman, disparu en 1986 largement négligé, retrouve enfin sa véritable place au premier rang. © SM/Qobuz
