Après Alexandre Desplat en 2012 pour Rise of the Guardians, c’est au tour de Daniel Pemberton (Steve Jobs de Danny Boyle, Cartel et Tout l’argent du monde de Ridley Scott) de signer la musique du second long-métrage de Peter Ramsey – premier Afro-Américain à diriger un film d’animation à gros budget à Hollywood. Dans cette nouvelle exploration cinématographique des comics Marvel, Miles Morales (seconde incarnation de Spider-Man) découvre un monde où d’autres que lui peuvent porter le masque de l’araignée. C’est donc un message optimiste et plein d’espoir qui anime le film, dans la mesure où, finalement, tout le monde peut être un héros. C’est avant tout cette dimension héroïque qui émerge de la BO de Pemberton, avec des plages comme Spider Training (et son ostinato de violoncelles), The Amazing Spider-Man (et ses cuivres épiques), ou bien Comic Book (dans lequel on peut repérer le thème dédié à Morales).
Les adeptes de BO à la fois percussives et cuivrées seront ravis. Même chose pour ceux qui conjuguent action et électro. C’est dans Into the Spider-Verse, Peter Enters the Spider-Verse et Gwen Enters the Spider-Verse que les synthétiseurs sont utilisés avec le plus d’audace. Néanmoins, Pemberton s’attache aussi à illustrer le quotidien new-yorkais de Morales, pas seulement l’aventure et l’imaginaire. Ainsi, des plages comme Catch the S Train ou bien Vision Brooklyn 1, 2, 3 surprennent par leur ambiance rythmique parfois jazzy, leurs synthés pétillants ou un sifflement badin. Il lui arrive même de succomber à un certain romantisme, comme dans le très reposant Mi Amor, ainsi que dans le piano solo/cordes intitulé For the Love of MJ. ©Nicolas Magenham/Qobuz
