On peut considérer cet enregistrement, réalisé par Yo-Yo Ma et le Silk Road Ensemble (« Ensemble de la Route de la soie »), comme une autre forme de crossover, de format planétaire. Les musiciens qui se joignent à l’ensemble proviennent de tous les horizons populaires au monde, et les pièce qu’ils jouent appartiennent au répertoire « personnel » de douzaines de pays différents. De la sorte, l’instrumentarium comprend – outre le violoncelle de Ma et quelques cordes classiques occidentales – le pipa, le shawu ou le cheng chinois ainsi que des voix d’ « opéra de Pékin », des percussions africaines, persanes, japonaises ou indiennes, le kamanche persan, le shakuhachi japonais, et tant d’autres. La grande majorité des pièces appartient au domaine purement populaire, ou a été écrite – adaptée, plutôt – par les membres de l’ensemble. L’unique moment classique occidental est… un arrangement pour cet instrumentarium bigarré du mouvement lent de la symphonie « Du Nouveau Monde » de Dvořák, avec ajout d’un texte chanté en chinois !
