Contemporain de Froberger, élève de Praetorius et Schütz, titulaire de grands instruments à Dresde puis à Hambourg, fondateur du Collegium Musicum de cette même ville, fort célèbre de son vivant, Matthias Weckmann n’a pourtant pas décroché la gloire posthume qu’il méritait tout autant que son successeur Buxtehude ou son mentor Praetorius. Ce n’est que récemment que ses nombreuses et très originales œuvres pour orgue ont enfin été remises à l’honneur, et l’intégrale que vient d’en réaliser Bernard Foccroulle aux claviers et pédaliers de trois somptueux instruments baroques d’Allemagne du Nord (le propre instrument de Weckmann à Hambourg, un à Hollern et un autre à Stade, deux bourgs à un jet de pierre de Hambourg) ne peut qu’apporter de l’eau au moulin : Weckmann fut l’un des grands bonshommes de son temps. Par l’entremise de Schütz, il fut exposé aux influences de la Renaissance italienne ; sa région d’élection et son contact avec Praetorius lui ouvrirent les portes du langage nord-allemand avec ses chromatismes, sa polyphonie flamboyante et son extravagante rigueur, si l’on veut bien accepter cet oxymore.
