Un petit nombre d’années avant d’intégrer James Taylor à bord du navire musical, le groupe était sur des flots moins « chantés » mais nettement plus périlleux sur les plans de l’instrumentation et de la rythmique. Maîtrisant par exemple parfaitement le mellotron, c’est sur cet album que le groupe donne la pleine mesure de ses talents d’innovateur mélodique.
Le point d’orgue – sans jeu de mots ou presque – réside dans « Summer Madness », cette épopée épique de quatre minutes avec le clavier qui monte sans cesse de ton pour finir sur une note éthérée apaisante. Mais ce morceau est en bonne compagnie avec « Fruitman », ode à la diversité alimentaire sur des relents funky, ou encore « Whiting H & G », autre réalisation purement instrumentale remplie de sons et de textures propices à l’évasion.
Un nouvel album à (re)découvrir pour ceux qui ont connu Kool et son Gang avec la douce voix de James Taylor.
