Dans l’entreprise d’édition de ses archives initiée par Joni Mitchell il y a trois ans, ce troisième volume est un morceau de choix. Il couvre la période 1972-1975, traversée par la totémique trilogie d’albums For the Roses, Court and Spark et The Hissing of Summer Lawns, vus des coulisses. Trois albums post-Blue qui montrent Joni Mitchell en pleine gloire, prolifique et en perpétuelle évolution, s’éloignant toujours plus des vertes prairies du folk pour planer vers une musique de haute altitude. La richesse de cette série d’archives, c’est qu’elle ne se contente pas de resservir les albums originaux dans des versions remastérisées. Elle explore les démos les plus secrètes, les concerts les plus prestigieux, les jams inédites et permet de redécouvrir à sa source pure l’art majestueusement délicat de Joni Mitchell.

Elle est souvent accompagnée d’une simple guitare acoustique, avec cette voix sans limites et inimitable, et des compositions qui larguent les amarres. En 96 titres, cette collection dessine le plan d’un labyrinthe liquide, parfois souterrain et qui parfois jaillit comme un torrent. Rien de nouveau, mais une redécouverte en version allégée, qui laisse place à l’imagination. Pour l’anecdote, on goûtera par exemple ce medley amusé à base de classiques du rock’n’roll, qui permet aussi de désacraliser la figure druidique de Joni Mitchell. Sur scène ou pendant l’enregistrement de démos, on l’entend souvent rire et insuffler de la vie à ses chansons dramatiquement belles.
