Chiaki Satō

Born in Iwate Prefecture, Japan, on September 20, 1988, Chiaki Satō built her reputation as a film and TV actress before launching a successful music career during the 2010s. Her earliest roles included the 2005 television drama Aozora Koi Hoshi and the 2007 film Hōtai Club, both of which were released while she was still a teenager. Chiaki Satō then joined Kinoko Teikoku, a four-piece band whose mix of dream-pop and shoegaze helped propel records like 2016's Ai no Yukue into the Top 20 of the Oricon Albums Chart. She served as the band's lead vocalist, guitarist, and chief songwriter, temporarily sidelining her acting commitments as Kinoko Teikoku began demanding more and more of her time. When the group disbanded following the release of 2018's Time Lapse, Chiaki Satō mounted a solo career with SickSickSickSick, a debut EP that appeared later that same year. She also resumed acting, notably appearing in the 2019 movie CAST and writing an original song, "Daikirai (I Hate You)," for the film's soundtrack. Planet, her full-length debut as a solo artist, was released in 2019, peaking at Number 38 in her native Japan. She continued expanding her sound in 2021, releasing standalone singles like the cinematic, six-minute orchestral rock ballad "Koe" and the buoyant indie-pop anthem "Kataware."
