Quasiment dix ans après ses débuts avec la mixtape autoproduite Extra Credit, Jackman Thomas Harlow, alias Jack Harlow, publie enfin son tout premier album. Celui-ci est l’aboutissement d’une période de trois ans très prolifique pour le rappeur originaire du Kentucky. Temporairement relocalisé à Atlanta en 2017, il a en effet été très actif avec trois nouvelles mixtapes en deux ans, et surtout un succès aussi massif qu’inattendu sur la plateforme TikTok au début de l’année 2020, où son single « Whats Poppin » est devenu l’une des tendances du moment.
Sans attendre, Jack Harlow a publié l’EP Sweet Action, mais les fans, nouveaux comme plus anciens, n’avaient dès lors les yeux rivés que sur la fin de l’année, pour laquelle était annoncé That’s What They All Say, censé enfin placer Louisville sur l’échiquier du rap américain. Ce premier effort abrite entre autres des collaborations avec Lil Baby, Big Sean, Chris Brown, Adam Levine, EST Gee, Bryson Tiller, DaBaby, Tory Lanez ou encore Lil Wayne, et le single « Whats Poppin » y est habilement remixé plusieurs fois. Autant dire que tous les ingrédients du succès sont réunis, y compris une véritable armada de producteurs parmi lesquels les incontournables Skrillex, Neenyo, Ayo the Producer ou encore Cubeatz.
Sans réelle surprise, c’est sur sa soudaine notoriété que Jack Harlow choisit d’axer les débats, mais il s’intéresse aussi aux conflits raciaux qui ont fait l’actualité américaine en 2020. Son statut de rappeur blanc le fait s’interroger sur sa propre crédibilité dans le rap game sur « Baxter Avenue », mais aussi davantage en filigrane, sur « Route 66 ». Son flow est incisif, ses beats efficaces, et la production est léchée. Certains textes sont vraiment bien sentis, comme ce « Keep It Light » sur lequel le rappeur décrit précisément les frustrations ressenties lorsque la célébrité entraîne dans son sillage de nouveaux amis forcément intéressés. S’il doit encore se défaire de son addiction au style de Drake, dont il s’approche encore trop fréquemment, Jack Harlow propose une entrée en matière solide et prometteuse.
