What if Taylor Swift had veered back toward Nashville instead of making pop-licious 1989? The result might sound a lot like Subject to Change, the fourth album from Kelsea Ballerini. Not only does she physically sound like Speak Now or Fearless-era Swift on songs like the upbeat title track and the soft and slow ballad "Love Is a Cowboy"—featuring true country fiddle—but Ballerini is also exposing more vulnerability than ever before. Hip-hop-ish "Doin' My Best," with its boosted bass and off-kilter handclaps, is brutally honest about the recent past. "2020 was a weird year/ Album dropped at a weird time/ Made the homecoming queen/ But you better believe I cried," Ballerini sings about her hit third album, Kelsea. There's a quick reference to her recently announced divorce ("Therapy for two/ When you get married that young/ You got a lot of shit you gotta get through") as well as a side-swipe at Halsey and their 2020 duet "The Other Girl: "I was friends with a pop star/ I put 'em on track four, but/ Wish I could take it back/ I would've never asked/ If I knew we wouldn't talk anymore." On the folky and sweet "Walk in the Park," Ballerini admits to being moody and inconsistent, singing, "Sometimes I'm a summer day/ Sometimes I start raining/ Always one season away/ From everything changing." But she's also known for being incredibly loyal to old friends, and wears that proudly on her sleeve for the barroom shuffle "If You Go Down (I'm Goin' Down Too)"—promising "I keep all your secrets by the dozen/ You know where my skeletons sleep/ Hypothetically, if you ever kill your husband/ Hand on the bible, I'd be lying through my teeth." There is Shania Twain-style '90s sass, plus an interpolation of Little Richard's "The Girl Can't Help It," on "I Can't Help Myself" (from having a good time, naturally). "The girls start calling/ The wine comes off of the shelf … All inhibitions are gone/ By a quarter to twelve," she sings, celebrating her trouble-loving side. "My therapist says/ I do this a lot/ I see her on Monday/ I'm coming in hot!" Kelly Clarkson and Carly Pearce join the boot-scootin' fun on "You're Drunk, Go Home," as cheeky as 2020's "Hole in the Bottle." "Muscle Memory" is breezy soft (country-)rock. "I Guess They Call It Fallin'" is R&B-inflected with a Destiny's Child-flavored chorus, and ballad "Universe"—with the line "You say I hang the stars in your eyes/ But you put the universe in mine"—is poised to be the wedding song of 2023. © Shelly Ridenour/Qobuz
