De façon étrange, George Harrison vole (enfin) la vedette à John Lennon et Paul McCartney après la séparation des Beatles, car il est partout. Après le raz-de-marée provoqué par All Things Must Pass et le méga-concert au profit du Bangladesh, l’indépendance semble lui réussir. Gros succès commercial, Living In the Material World est, assez injustement d’ailleurs, fortement décrié par la critique. On reproche à George le caractère moralisateur de ses textes et beaucoup sont perplexes face au paradoxe que constitue sa condamnation d’un système dirigé par l’argent compte tenu de sa confortable position d’ex-Beatle.
Au-delà des ces considérations terre-à-terre, Living In the Material World est un album d’assez bonne facture, peut-être moins spectaculaire que le précédent, mais Harrison y apparaît au sommet de son art. Qu’il s’accorde une parenthèse blues (« Sue Me, Sue You Blues ») ou qu’il parle d’amour (« Don’t Let Me Wait Too Long »), son jeu de guitare est impeccable. Et si sa quête de spiritualité en agace certains, elle continue d’avoir une place prédominante dans sa musique (« Give Me Love (Give Me Peace On Earth) »).
