Ces deux dernières années, l'ascension de 21 Savage aura été vertigineuse. Rookie de l'année 2016 à la faveur d'un sublime EP produit par le producteur du moment Metro Boomin (le ténébreux Savage Mode), Shayaa Bin Abraham-Joseph est devenu en 2017 l'une des têtes d'affiche de la nouvelle génération du rap d'Atlanta, grâce notamment à Bank Account, single de son premier album Issa, et à sa participation au tube mondial de Post Malone, Rockstar. Présent sur trois titres du superbe NOT ALL HEROES WEAR CAPES de Boomin, 21 Savage avait sans doute à cœur, avec i am > i was (traduire : "je suis meilleur que je ne l'étais »), de s'émanciper du hitmaker qui l'a révélé.
En élargissant considérablement son champ d'interprétation (abandonnant volontiers le rap chuchoté et menaçant qui a fait sa réputation) et en enrôlant une bande de beatmakers férus de samples (il a confié une bonne partie des pistes à Kid Hazel, un producteur de Las Vegas qu'il a signé sur son label Slaughter Gang et deux morceaux au Californien DJ Dahi, qui a accroché Kendrick Lamar et Freddie Gibbs à son tableau de chasse), 21 Savage fait plus que ça : il impose une vision et fait montre d'une ouverture d'esprit qu'on ne soupçonnait pas. Du soulful a lot qui doit beaucoup au superbe sample d'East of Underground (groupe de R&B embauché et produit par l'armée américaine dans les 70's et redécouvert par le label Now Again) au très sexy a&t qui reprend un classique du rap Dirty South, en passant par Out for the Night, construit autour d'un riff du guitar hero Santana, 21 Savage est à l'aise dans tous les registres et dame le pion aux rappeurs 5 étoiles passés dans son studio : J Cole, Post Malone, Offset, Travis Scott ou Childish Gambino. © Damien Besançon/Qobuz
