Artiste avant-gardiste perpétuellement en avance sur son temps, Michael Jackson est, en 1991, toujours engagé dans une compétition à distance avec Prince pour la suprématie planétaire. Ayant senti le vent de l'évolution tourner, Michael Jackson décide de se lancer à corps perdu dans ce qui s'appelle alors le New Jack Swing, qui donnera naissance au R&B contemporain.

Pour opérer cette transition, l'historique Quincy Jones cède sa place à Teddy Riley, auréolé de succès avec Blackstreet et considéré comme l'un des pères du style New Jack. Le résultat s'avère à la hauteur des espérances de Michael Jackson, qui répond de la meilleure des manières à Diamonds & Pearls de son rival, sorti un mois avant. Une réponse du berger à la bergère qui tournera en terme d'influence en faveur de Michael Jackson, dont ce sera le dernier album marquant avant sa longue agonie claustrophobe.

La chanson la plus remarquable du lot est certainement « Remember the Time », où le « King of Pop » semble avoir atteint sa plénitude avec un morceau ne sonnant pas démodé. Dangerous regorge aussi de détails amusants comme la présence de Stéphanie de Monaco sur l'intro de « In the Closet » (créditée en tant que « Mystery Girl » sur l'édition originale), celle de Shanice dans l'anonymat des choeurs, et évidemment le fameux solo de guitare de Slash (Guns N'Roses) sur « Black & White », ou encore le renfort du rappeur Heavy D sur « Jam ».

Hélas, Dangerous n'aura jamais véritablement de suite, si ce n'est l'album posthume Xscape (2014), qui s'en inspire largement. Pour clore le parallèle avec Prince, il faut relever que ce dernier ne sera plus jamais le même, puisqu'en 1992, il se transforme en Love Symbol et entame sa descente de l'Olympe. La sortie de Dangerous marque donc autant la fin d'une époque que le début d'une autre, deux génies ayant lancé avec une troublante synchronicité un genre qui deviendra le style majeur des décennies suivantes.
