Breakfast in America a été pour Supertramp un hit au succès fracassant qui a dominé les charts pendants quatre semaines aux États-Unis et s’est vendu à des millions d’exemplaires dans le monde entier avec plus de 18 millions d’albums vendus en 1990. Même si leurs opus précédents avaient connu un certains succès, jamais ils n'avaient fait tinter le tiroir-caisse comme Breakfast in America. Là encore, les disques précédents de Supertramp n'avaient pas l’orientation pop de Breakfast. Dans sa majorité, l’album consiste de chansons pop bien construites, entraînantes et solidement écrites, comme les hits "The Logical Song", "Take the Long Way Home" et "Goodbye Stranger". Supertramp a toujours montré une certaine tendance à la suffisance, mais Breakfast in America ne présente que très peu de faiblesses. Ils ont clairement atteint ici leur plus haut niveau.
