Before The Beginning ? Avant d’inonder les ondes sous sa version la plus populaire (augmentée de Lindsey Buckingham, Stevie Nicks et Christine McVie), en 1968, Fleetwood Mac existe déjà. Née sur les cendres des Bluesbreakers, la formation, sous l'impulsion du génial Peter Green (avec deux autres guitaristes, Jeremy Spencer et le très jeune Danny Kirwan, Mick Fleetwood à la batterie et John McVie à la basse), puise dans le blues du Delta en reprenant ses figures mythiques : Robert Johnson, Elmore James, T-Bone Walker… En trois disques, Sony exhume une trentaine de live inédits de 1968 et de 1970 – dont quatre démos. Des bandes miraculées, expertisées car non labellisées, approuvées par ses pères, qui ont le mérite de proposer une vision tout en contraste. Les prémices de 1968 avec des guitares verveuses et dévotes. Puis les délires de 70 et l’implosion latente avec de longues parties instrumentales habitées signées Green, comme ce vibrant Rattlesnake Shake de 13 minutes, ce bien furieux Oh Well ou les langueurs du fameux Albatross. Des versions matricielles plus brutes et impolies. Ensuite, Spencer rejoindra les Fils de Dieu, Kirwan sera viré pour alcoolisme et le génie de Peter Green basculera définitivement dans la folie.
