Entre décembre 1970 et 1975, Fred Wesley prend les rênes des JB's, l'orchestre de James Brown, tout-puissant roi d'un funk que le tromboniste et directeur musical a grandement contribué à créer. Après la trilogie de rêve Doin' It To Death (1973), Damn Right I Am Somebody et Breakin' Bread (1974) suivie d'un départ fracassant, Wesley rejoint George Clinton et Bootsy Collins au sein de la confrérie Parliament-Funkadelic.

Le tromboniste, épaulé par le saxophoniste alto Maceo Parker, et un coup de main du général Clinton qui cosigne tous les titres avec son lieutenant Collins, parvient à réunir un solide équipage pour son premier album en leader. Tout ce beau monde, auquel s'additionnent les cuivres des frères Brecker, Bernie Worrell, Gary Shider et une bordée de choristes, fourbit un funk lourd et surchauffé jusqu'à la moiteur.

Les tourneries hypnotiques des cuivres (« Up for the Down Stroke »), les tapis de basse caoutchouteux (« Between Two Sheets ») et les instrumentaux jazz moelleux  (« Four Play », « Peace Fugue ») contribuent à faire de ce A Blow for Me, A Toot for You un monument témoignant de la vitalité et de l'ingéniosité du P-Funk à la grande époque. Un must pour tous les collectionneurs et curieux de la chose.
