Nel 2013, con Walking Shadows, Joshua Redman aveva immerso il suo sassofono in un bell’arrangiamento orchestrale firmato dal compositore Patrick Zimmerli. Sei anni dopo, i due tornano con Sun on Sand, un’intensa suite in cui ciascun movimento è, per dirla con Zimmerli, che ne è l’autore, “un’espressione di luce”. Redman è accompagnato dall’orchestra Brooklyn Rider, dal bassista Scott Colley e dal percussionnista Satoshi Takeishi. Tutto questo piccolo mondo fa vacillare le frontiere che separano jazz e musica contemporanea, grazie a un’alleanza fuori dal coro, è il caso di dirlo, di briciole raccolte qua e là, da George Russell, da Milton Babbitt, da Michael Nyman o da Frank Zappa. Se si parla di luce, è luce in tutte le sue varie forme. Dal chiaroscuro al sole pieno, il disco di Joshua Redman e Patrick Zimmerli è un campionario di sfumature originali.
