Pubblicata originariamente nel 1988, la compilation Money for Nothing dei Dire Straits è stata recentemente rimasterizzata in occasione dei 10 anni di attività discografica della band inglese. Con oltre 14 milioni di copie vendute in tutto il mondo, offriva un interessante panorama dei loro primi cinque album, una sintesi notevole che la presente ristampa replica fedelmente. Il brano di punta della band, Sultans of Swing, con i suoi volubili assoli di chitarra, apre con brio questo popolare best-of. Nel 1978, lontano dalle mode disco, punk e heavy metal, la band di Mark Knopfler impose un suono rock quasi “old school”, con voce alla Dylan e assoli virtuosi. Tra gli altri must di questa compilation, vanno segnalate Romeo and Juliet (un riferimento shakespeariano in cui l’originale rivalità dei due clan è qui sostituita da un materialismo che rende impossibile il loro amore), l’epica Telegraph Road (e il suo vertiginoso riff di chitarra), la delicata e malinconica Private Investigations (in cui vibrafoni, marimbe e synth dialogano con la sezione ritmica), e naturalmente Walk of Life, con il suo leggendario estro sintetico. Per quanto riguarda la canzone che dà il titolo all’album, si tratta di una satira sferzante sull’americano medio che beneficia dell’eccezionale partecipazione di Sting alla voce e alla melodia.
