EMI Classics' reissue of Carlo Maria Giulini's recordings of Rossini overtures is a mainstay of the catalog, and it's hard to beat for its first-rate performances and affordability. The overtures to La scala di seta, Il signor Bruschino, Tancredi, L'italiana in Algeri, Il barbiere di Siviglia, La cenerentola, La gazza ladra, Semiramide, and Guillaume Tell are the most famous of Rossini's works, though most of the operas associated with them are rarely performed (and with the exception of the popular Il barbiere di Siviglia, seldom recorded). The interpretations are spot-on and the playing is as lively, vibrant, and exciting as can be expected of these popular concert pieces. Giulini and the Philharmonia Orchestra recorded the tracks on this disc in 1961 and 1965, and the stereo sound is extraordinary for the time, thanks to the careful preservation of the original master tapes. The compilation was digitally remastered in 2004, so the reproduction is as good as one might wish, with no discernable analog hiss or any loss of audio quality. This album is an excellent choice for beginners who are building a basic classical collection.
