Gli amanti dei fasti della famiglia reale britannica resteranno soddisfatti da questo doppio album che riproduce la «Musica per l’incoronazione» dei quattro sovrani del XXesimo secolo: Edoardo VII nel 1902, Giorgio V nel 1911, Giorgio VI nel 1937 e l’attuale sovrana Elisabetta II nel 1953. Poche sono le cerimonie al giorno d’oggi che raggiungono un tale grado di magnificenza.
Punto d’incontro tra tradizione e innovazione, queste feste dell’incoronamento sono caratterizzate musicalmente dall’evocazione di opere patrimoniali del passato alle quali vengono confrontate numerose musiche commissionate per l’occasione ai migliori compositori del regno. Per portare a termine una tale impresa, bisogna chiudere l’abbazia di Westminster per diversi mesi affinché un esercito di operai possa erigere gallerie monumentali in grado di ricevere quasi mille invitati. Bisogna poi fare le prove con importanti effettivi corali composti da quattrocento voci la cui metà comprende voci di bambini, un’immensa orchestra e il grande e onnipresente organo. La presente registrazione è costituita da una selezione dei migliori momenti di tutte queste cerimonie, presentate come un’unica struttura liturgica. Questa vasta ricostituzione diretta da Paul McCreesh segue principalmente la cerimonia del 1937, abbandonando tuttavia lo stile tipico di quell’epoca nell’interpretazione di Haendel. L’approccio alla sua musica è talmente cambiato che viene presentato qui nello stile «barocco» tipico dell’inizio del XXIesimo secolo. È stato necessario fare scelte dolorose, soprattutto per quanto riguarda il Te Deum, pezzo forte e punto culminante della cerimonia. Dilemma corneliano tra quello di Stanford (1902), Parry (1911), Vaughan Williams (1937) e William Walton (1953).
