Cet album gris, comme l’indique assez bien l’une de ses chansons (« All Cats are Grey »), et morbide, car marqué par la mort de la mère de Tolhurst (« The Funeral Party »), reprend les choses là où les avaient laissées Seventeen Seconds.
Dominé par la basse de Simon Gallup, souvent passée au flanger, il présente une nouvelle fois des rythmes hypnotiques, répétitifs, une voix angoissée noyée dans la réverb : le style Cure période « cold wave » par excellence… Le single, « Primary », est le titre le plus rapide, mais pas le plus gai (enfin, le moins triste…). Comparé à Closer de Joy Division par la presse, cet album se classera 14ème dans les charts anglais…
En bonus CD, la bande-son du film Carnage Visors : un instrumental encore plus lent et glauque que le reste. Faith est une œuvre complète, belle, glacée et déprimante. Avec ce disque, on croyait avoir atteint un sommet (ou touché le fond), mais le groupe allait faire encore plus fort l’année suivante avec Pornography…
La version « Deluxe » comprend un CD supplémentaire, tout au bout duquel on retrouve le single « Charlotte Sometimes », qui ajoute quelques couleurs (pâles) à l’ensemble.
