Nel 2016, Shabaka Hutchings ha fatto il suo debutto su Impulse! con Your Queen Is a Reptile registrato con il moniker Sons of Kemet. Sassofonista di punta della fiorente scena jazz britannica, dal suo debutto ha collaborato con una serie di band (Sun Ra Arkestra, Heliocentrics, Anthony Joseph, Floating Points) e moltiplicato i suoi progetti (The Comet Is Coming, Melt Yourself Down). Nel nuovo album appena pubblicato con Shabaka & The Ancestors, assieme ai musicisti di Johannesburg dà vita a un jazz eterogeneo, impegnato, che mescola spiritualità e sensazioni sciamaniche. Quattro anni dopo Wisdom of Elder, con We Are Sent Here By History continua l'avventura sudafricana. Ancora una volta circondato da una sezione ritmica tanto potente quanto raffinata, composta dal bassista Ariel Zamonsky, dal batterista Tumi Mogorosi e dal percussionista Gontse Makhene, da fiati allo stato dell'arte (il sax contralto Mthunzi Mvubu e il trombettista Mandla Mlangeni) e dai pianisti Nduduzo Makhathini e Thandi Ntuli, Shabaka erge ponti sempre più forti tra il jazz ereditato da Sun Ra, Pharoah Sanders e Don Cherry, e una grande varietà di musica africana. Le canzoni zulu (We Will Work (On Redefining Manhood)) e i testi cantati da Siyabonga Mthembu che trattano di ecologia e relazioni tra uomo e donna arricchiscono questo torrente di musica.
